Don Hermann, founder of PuPla Cigars, is exactly such a personality.
His love for cigars began early – his revolution in the cigar world came later.
After moving to the Dominican Republic and founding PuPla in 2007, a journey full of passion, experiments, and precise craftsmanship began.
The Osele Method – A New Standard
The big manufacturers of the world roll their cigars according to tradition.
PuPla Cigars goes one step further – with a process that can rightly be called a quantum leap: the Osele Method.
Each cigar is made from rectangular cut tobacco leaves, selected from the best, central part.
All tobaccos are aged at least five years.
From up to 11 such segments, precisely blended and layered with millimeter precision, a flavor emerges that is not only harmonious – but identical in every cigar.
PuPla cigars are almost cloned: Identical in taste, draw, weight, color, smoke development, and burn a precision that the cigar world has never seen before.
The Path to the Perfect Cigar
What sets PuPla Cigars apart begins with the raw material – and doesn’t end until many months later.
🟫 1. Rectangular Cutting of Tobacco Leaves
Instead of working with whole, differently sized leaves as the industry does, PuPla cuts exact rectangular segments from each leaf – always from the best, central part. This is where the precision that makes every cigar unique begins.
🧪 2. Precise Blending – Like in Perfumery
Each cigar contains a defined number of tobacco segments – usually 11 pieces. These come from up to five different tobacco varieties, in a precisely defined blend ratio: e.g., 2 rectangles of variety A, 3 of variety B, 1 of variety C, etc.
→ This creates a reproducible, controlled blend – not a random mixture.
📐 3. Offset Layering & Hand Rolling
The rectangles are layered with millimeter accuracy, to control draw and density. Then they are rolled by the most experienced hands using a special rolling process.
🧘♂️ 4. Pre-Maturing Before Rolling
Before the cigars are even rolled, the prepared blends (each exactly for one cigar) are stored separately for several months.
→ This prevents aromas of different varieties from mixing. Unique – because all other manufacturers “marry” cigars after rolling, in mixed storage rooms.
🪵 5. Tubo Storage in Cedarwood – Individually for Each Cigar
After rolling, each cigar goes into its own cedarwood tubo. There it matures further – protected, without loss of aroma, contamination, or chemicals.
🌡️ 6. Pest Protection – Without Freezing or Chemicals
Thanks to a specially developed method, the cigars remain free of pests, without freezing or chemical treatment – which often destroys aging in other brands.
Aged with Patience – Not Chemicals
After rolling, it’s not simply packaging – it’s refinement. Each cigar rests for months in its own cedarwood tubo,
developed by Don Hermann himself. Without chemicals. Without freezing.
Instead, a method that kills pests and their eggs – and keeps the tobacco alive, so it continues to mature.
Limited Production is No Marketing – It’s a Promise
Only those who control everything themselves can guarantee perfection.
That’s why PuPla Cigars are produced exclusively in their own factory in Yasica near Puerto Plata
and sold only there – or through their own online shop.
No dealers, no intermediate storage, no compromises. Only about 60,000 cigars per year leave the factory.
Each one the result of countless experiments, finest craftsmanship, and uncompromising quality.
